100 motto ideas: the big collection for your year group

The motto sits above everything: on the hoodie, on the poster, on the yearbook. It is the first thing the whole year group has to agree on — and usually the thing that gets discussed longest. So you don’t start from nothing, we have put together 100 ideas, sorted by style. Grab a few favourites, make them your own — and let the year group vote.

A note on language. The list below is in German, and deliberately so. German school-leaving mottos almost all play on the syllable “Abi” (Abitur) — a pun that has no equivalent in English, and translating it would produce phrases no cohort would ever print. What travels is the principle: take a well-known title, a game, a holiday, and fold the name of your qualification into it. The category headings show you the angles that work; the German examples show how far you can push each one.

How to turn this into your motto

A good motto is 50 % idea and 50 % vote. Three quick steps:

1. Collect — everyone throws 1–2 suggestions into the pot (from this list if you like, ideally bent to fit your year or an inside joke).
2. Shortlist — down to five to eight.
3. Vote — openly, with the whole year group, with a clear end date.
